Miners and prospectors ascend the Chilkoot Trail during the Klondike Gold Rush (wikipedia.org)

The Northwest District hosts the annual Klondike Derby for Boy Scout troops in January. This competitive event includes winter camping and Scoutcraft events to challenge Scouts and promote the patrol method. The Klondike Derby is a tribute to the hearty miners seeking gold in the Klondike area of the Yukon Territory more than 100 years ago.

The miners left Seattle and traveled through difficult terrain to reach the gold fields. Some traveled by sea and river, others overland. The most difficult route was also the cheapest and challenged even the most knowledgable travelers. The most common picture of this difficult journey was the climb from Skagway up the Chilkoot Trail and over the Chilkoot Pass (shown here).

The Klondike Derby borrows elements from that journey adding Scout skills to create a challenging event.
