In the following tutorial, you will learn how to navigate the Northwest District website. This is a rudimentary concept, and should take only a few minutes to understand.

Hypertext links are the basis of the internet and our website. Links allow a user to perform an action, like opening another web page.

CAUTION: Clicking the links below will take you off this page. Click your browser's "Back" button to return to this page, and then select the Links tab.

• This blue color indicates that the preceding text is a link with an existing destination. The page it points towards exists.
• This red color indicates that the preceding text has a link without an existing destination. The page it points towards does not exist.

There are different types of links in our website. One type is the wikilink, which allows our authors to easily create connections between different parts of our wiki site. The following code shows what a wikilink looks like: two left brackets followed by the name of the wiki page, separated by a pipe (the vertical line), followed by the link name, and finished with two right brackets.

The other type of link connects this site to outside sites. An example of this might be a link to the National Council website. Notice the graphic behind that link; it tells you the text connects to an outside website.

The site coordinates links to make it easier for people to navigate. Links are grouped together logically to form Navigation Bars, either horizontal or vertical. Take a look at the following picture and notice the two highlighted areas, A and B.

The two areas outline the Left Side Navigation Bar (A) and the User Account Navigation Bar (B). From now on, the name Navigation Bar will be abbreviated to "navbar". If you do not have a user account, (B) just shows the IP address of your computer and a login link.

The Left Side Navbar (it may also be called "left navbar" or "left sidebar") contains the Site Hubs and the Toolbox.

The Site Hubs

This website is essentially a large patchwork of different pages. To give it some structure, five special pages were created called "hubs" that coordinates the pages according to topic or importance. Take a few minutes to look through each of the different hubs. They probably are not all finished yet, but you should get the idea of what each is attempting to achieve.

Toolbox

The toolbox contains special pages that you may find useful when navigating through the site. Some of the links will change based on which page you are viewing or editing.

User Account Navbar

Until you create an account, the User Navbar shows your IP address (a series of numbers separated by dots) and a login link. After you have created an account, you will receive access to a personal page, a personal talk page, site preferences, a page watchlist, a message board, and a list of articles you contributed. These are important to the process of building the website and making you feel at home, as they can be personalized to you.
